Valentine’s Pom-Pom Wreath!

I told my husband that pom-poms are the “in thing” on the blogs right now. I also told him, while walking through an antique store and spotting a pair of antlers, that they are also the “in thing” in the blog world. ((he may think i’m crazy)). But seriously,…I’ve been seeing pom-poms (and antlers) EVERYWHERE! I’m still undecided on the antler thing, but the pom-poms?! Yes please!

I first spotted this tutorial back in December and have been dying to make a pom-pom wreath ever since. Last night I finished this (mother of alllllll mothers…it’s quite large!!) Valentine’s pom-pom wreath for our front door. Yes, it’s a bit large and extreme,…but I’m kinda loving it. Nothing says HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!!! like a MONSTROUS pom-pom wreath, no?! HA!

I added the little heart in the center with some felt, stuffing, needle, and yarn…I thought it added another cute little festive touch!

Seriously,…I’m addicted to pom-poms right now and you should be too! Make a cute garland or a pom-pom for your beanie, or a pom-pom flower or a wreath. ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES!

This cinnamon bread,…YUM!

I made it the beginning of last week and it was GOOD. It took some time to make,…but it was well worth it! Our house smelled divine.

Easy DIY Valentine Garlands

January 21, 2013

Now that Christmas has come to a close, Ruby keeps asking me what holiday comes next. I think she’s had a tough time letting Christmas go. Just the other day she asked me to play “The Little Drummer Boy” on Pandora. Poor girl,…I feel her pain. I do. SO, we have jumped on the Valentines decorating a little early,…we’ve had these garlands up for a couple of weeks now, but we’re enjoying our early Valentines spirit and can’t wait to put up more decorations in the next couple of weeks.

These garlands were the perfect DIY/craft to do with Ruby.  They were definitely easy to make and took no time at all to whip up!

20130121-151052.jpg

Using a needle and thread for the first time, Ruby was able to string the pom-pom balls onto the baker twine with no problem. It was so sweet and fun to see her do this. We did it one rainy afternoon and it was the perfect activity to do. Cute, quick, and you felt like you’d accomplished something when you were finished!

The sparkly hearts garland was another easy one to make using Dollar Tree foam stickers and baker’s twine.

Since the foam hearts were stickers, all we had to do was stick the hearts on the bakers twine, back-to-back. We used about two sheets of stickers to make the garland and that was it. 2 dollars later and we had a fun craft to make and decorate with!

The little yarn garland was made using this tutorial I found through My Cakies blog. It was SO much fun to make and I’ve already reused it! It was first a garland for my 30th birthday celebration (which I hope to post about later this week) and now it’s been relocated to the Valentine’s smorgasbord of garlands in our kitchen :) .

Hope you try one of these garlands out to make your Valentine’s extra festive!

Our Cozy Little Home…

January 19, 2013

This coming March will be 3 years since we moved into our cozy little gift of a home. And is it sad to admit that its taken me almost 3 years to get into the groove of decorating my home? Once we added kids into our mix, I realized that everything you do takes SO much more time and energy (duh…). My indecisiveness doesn’t help things either.  But, I’m happy to report that last spring we painted our living room (yes,…I said I was indecisive AND also very late at posting pics…) Its called “gypsy magic” and it’s made by Behr. I loved how the color turned out. And I also love my color theme that is beginning to evolve as the days go by.

It took me a while to find a curtain that I liked and felt went with my bold purple walls. I went back and forth on a few panels I had seen at Anthropologie, but ended up stumbling upon this fabric at Hobby Lobby and knew right away this was what I wanted. It was bright and happy and melded well with my walls, but wasn’t overbearing. I’m still trying to decide what I should do with our HUGE window and if a small panel should go up top or how I should work that….or just keep it open without anything on them. Not sure…any ideas? I love all the colors in the curtain panel and right away gravitated towards that gold color…hence the gold accent pillow on my chair that I scored at a local estate sale. I love how the colors in my curtains still mesh rather well with colors in my stained glass window. I’m liking how its unfolding.

This house has been a gift from God. I remember the first time we walked through it, after looking at a bajillllllion million house and placing offers on numerous houses and losing them and being SO bummed,…and thinking as we walked through that this house was WAY too nice. There was NO way we’d get it. It was the nicest home we had looked at,…everything was complete. It was too good to be true. And at first we didn’t get it. Someone outbid us…but then we got that call from our realtor, in the middle of a snowstorm, while we were visiting our family on the east coast. And our realtor told us it was ours,..that the other bidder fell through and we could have it, but needed to act fast. J drove out in the snow to fax our paperwork (when nearly everything was closed because of the snow!) and it was crazy,…and surreal. But, it was OURS! And it was an amazing feeling. I remember thinking there was NO way we should have gotten this house. We had put bids on SO many other houses and never got them and this was the nicest house we had looked at. It was totally a gift from God. He knew what we had desired and what we needed. And he gave us far more than we deserved. In the midst of discouragement and thinking we’d never find anything, God provided. He knew what we needed.

I don’t know how long we’ll be in this home,… but I’m so thankful for it and the gift it has been to us. So thankful God provided this haven for us. It’s far more than we need or deserve…but so very perfect…

Crafty Therapy

January 15, 2013

Lately I’ve been needing to be creative. Life has been tiresome for me lately, honestly. I’ve just felt a little worn out. And in that exhaustion, I’ve had this desire to keep my hands busy. Crafting,..baking,..painting…you have to think to do it, but only so much. And as your measuring out ingredients or repetitively winding a ball of yarn or brushing that stroke of paint, it is all peaceful. Ok let me clarify that, all this is done ONCE the kids are in bed and the house is quiet and calm…that one key component is what makes all the difference. I’ve been soaking up my creative side so much lately,…it calms my mind, gives me time slow down, time to ponder life and the things that are going on in my life. Its therapeutic. And, I kinda need that right now.

20130115-132013.jpg

So, I was so excited to try this painting out when I spotted it on Meg Duerkson’s site (which I actually found out she got from the Pleated Poppy. Tutorial here) I’ve always enjoyed her blog,..always uplifting and encouraging and SO colorful and happy! I usually tend to be blah neutral with my colors. I’ve realized I’m a bit afraid of color. I’m a bad decision maker and think I just always go with the neutral because I know it’ll mesh with everything…but how boring is that? Lately I’ve been trying to add some color to my life and be a little more bold…who cares if I don’t like it forever and it eventually isn’t my style. I’m going to enjoy it NOW…and not worry about saving it for later.

20130115-132022.jpg

This was the perfect project to do over a weeks time,…I did a little at a time. Measuring out the leaf shapes as the kids were coloring at the counter on afternoon, painting the background a bit at a time at night, and then adding in the different colors at the kitchen table late at night when the kids were peacefully asleep,… and it was the perfect mind calming thing to do. No decisions,…the same methodical pattern,…and just a choosing of color. Loved doing this. 20130118-091406.jpgAnd really happy with the end result. Colorful. LOVE. If you need something that’s mindless, that puts you at ease, I totally recommend you trying this out…was so fun!
