Happy Memorial Day

May 31, 2010

In honor of those who have fought for our freedom. Sacrificed their lives, so that we can live freely in this country. Because of those brave men and women, I am able to wish you a Happy Memorial Day.

Brandywine Summit: Oh the playground,…

May 27, 2010

Oh, the playground at Brandywine Summit!

I promise this isn’t from a horror amusement park or some ultra freaky circus,…

It really is one of the old play structures (of two!) that were at Brandywine Summit.

We grew up on this,…the childs swing with the chain linked latch and the glider,…I used to go pretty high on that thing!

And, oh the metal slide! I have vivid memories from our family videos of my twin cousins sliding down this in their diapers. Diapers and a pair of shoes. That was it. Can’t get any cuter than that, folks.

And the see saw. I got bumped up in the air, SO many times. My poor baby bum.. big bully cousins and pesky siblings. He he he….

Those were pretty fun. You would fly up in the air SO incredibly high! They don’t make see saws like this anymore, I guess. Too many lawsuits??

Oh, and the swings!! The swings! You can’t forget the swings! Have you ever seen a swing like this before? I don’t think I’ve EVER seen another swing like this…

The swings backed up to this magical forest. We used to swing on here, with the creaky, whine-of-a-sound, going back and forth, back and forth…I used to be able to swing forever (now I just feel carsick when I do it for too long!). In between swinging, we’d run down into the magical forest and play in the creek, finding all sorts of things, including mica! I don’t know if I can begin to tell of Luke, Chris, and John’s islands they had down there,…maybe that’ll be for another post.

But, I can tell  you this. Even though it may look like this place belongs right out of the Dharma Initiative, it was a LOVELY place. Just writing this and looking at these pictures makes me wanna go back there. I hope Ruby can have something like this someday. A beautiful memory growing up as a child.

Nostalgia: Brandywine Summit

May 25, 2010

Oh man,… nostalgia just hit me BIG time.

This is Brandywine Summit: home to many of my childhood memories. Every summer growing up, we’d pack our family van full and drive the 45 minutes (which seemed SO incredibly far back then…hilarious, I know!) and head up to Brandywine Summit Camp Meeting Ground. Sometimes we’d stay for just a weekend, other times it’d be for a week at a time.

My immediate family of 7, YES 7!, came up here often to relax and get away from regular life.  My dad also grew up going to Brandywine Summit and stayed in this same cottage when he was a kid, along with his 2 older brothers. He used to tell stories of his great aunts, my great, GREAT aunts, who owned the place in the early 1900′s and lived here throughout the hot and humid east coast summer months.

When my dad and his brothers got older, they took over the cottage and brought along their children during the summers to hang out. It was a pretty cozy place.

Honestly, I’m sure you’re looking at these pictures and thinking, cozy?! What are you talking about?! More like creepy, you’re thinking! But, oh my,…it was cozy, so fun, we used to love it up there! See the HUGE tree trunk in the picture above? The cottage was built around that tree. Meaning: part of the wall INSIDE the cottage was home to the other side of that tree trunk! Crazy, huh?!

My sister, Ruby, and I drove up last summer to check it out while Ruby, J, and I were out for an East Coast trip. We walked through and relived the memories of our childhood tromps around Brandywine Summit. I admit it was ghostlike being up there,…not many people were around, but it brought back SO many fond, happy, and hilarious memories. Memories only my family could appreciate and understand.

I was flipping through my photo library earlier this evening and even though these pics are over a year old, I HAD to post them. I plan to make a couple of more posts in the next few days on sweet, old Brandywine Summit. I have to. For old times sake.

Hip Momma Burp Cloths!

May 21, 2010

Ever since a thoughtful friend of mine gifted me with a cute set of baby burp cloths when I was pregnant with Ruby, I have not been able to stop making these as gifts!

I know I’ve showed you some of these before, but I just had to share this set with you.

They are so simple to make, yet still require some love and care in the process of making them. I think they are just so adorable! I mean, really, if you’re going to have to clean up your baby’s mess, you might as well do it in style, right?!

And with just a little swatch of fabric, a diaper cloth, and a little bit of love, you can create a sweet hip momma burp cloth for a special friend.
