The Happiest Place on Earth

August 30, 2010

Guess who got to go to the “happiest place on earth”?

Little Miss Ruby, that’s who!

A CRAZY work week, led to a mini, spur of the moment, getaway up to the land of Disney for the day.

Highlights: the teacups, Small World, Mr. Toads Wild Ride, riding the “choo-choo”, a 3-D Captain EO viewing (J was really excited about this one!), and the favorite, carousel rides!

Can you believe Ruby’s favorite ride was the carousel or shall I call it, “neigh-neigh”, as she does. She cried when she had to get off after each ride. We went two times in a row, which meant two bouts of tears. Oh how cute. She LOVED it. I’m thinking she takes after my older sister on this one, who has always loved carousels!

Our little gem even got some Mickey Mouse ears at the end. She fell asleep on the way out, but J insisted she get the ears, with her name embroidered of course. When we got to the car to head home, she woke and was given the ears. LOVED them!

“at-at”! (“hat-hat”), she said, patting her head.

Another round of tears were had as we put her in the carseat. But, at least she had her “at!”. And, I don’t blame her, who would want to leave the “happiest place on earth”?!

Jen’s Regular Friday Post: Bargaining with a Baby

August 28, 2010

I’m SO jealous of Jen’s cute garage sale finds! Check them out! The west coast needs some yard sales like these!

Lydia

I wish I could say I’m a great garage sale shopper, but I’m not. The truth is that I can rarely get out of the house in time to find the best stuff at a garage sale. By the time I’m ready, I figure most of the good stuff is gone, so I just don’t go. But one day I saw a sign in the neighborhood and decided to act on it. The sign mentioned something about antiques and that piqued my interest. Jeff and I followed the signs around the neighborhood and finally came upon a treasure.

It was a lady who used to own an antique store selling a ton of items in her front yard. There were some nice, expensive pieces, but I had my eyes on the cheapos.

So I found these 3 vintagey items and made my way to the seller hoping I could get a deal. The lady was oohing and ahhing over Graham. She even asked to hold him. And I of course thought I could do a little negotiating. That’s why God gave us cute babies, right? She wouldn’t budge much. I guess I was a little inexperienced with the whole bargaining thing, and she could probably tell. How could she not go down on her prices when I was letting her, a complete stranger, hold my baby?

Not sure what this was supposed to be, but I use it to hold magazines.
I still got a deal (or so I thought), and now I have a few cool pieces to add to my home. I could really get into this whole garage sale thing if I always found stuff like this!

Busy, busy, busy…

August 26, 2010

Wow. It has been a BUSY week,… to say the least. If you’re a follower of my facebook page, you’ll know that I officially sent out my second letterpress job yesterday!! Yes, you heard that right, second. I know that may seem silly. Two letterpress jobs, whoop-dee-doo, but let me know tell you… I couldn’t be more thrilled! I’m hoping these 2 jobs will turn into 5 jobs, then 10 jobs, and on from there.

I’ve found a great letterpress company in San Diego. The people there are wonderful and they do BEAUTIFUL work. I can’t wait to share about this more!

But enough about that for now. I have great posts planned for next week. A possible viewing of the first Lydia’s Pen and Paper letterpress job, maybe? It’s my baby and I can’t wait to share it with you! A cute activity Ruby and I did together this week. Oh, what a sweetie! And maybe even a few more invitations I’ve popped out in these last few weeks. I’m so behind!

I’m looking forward to heading to the East Coast in a few weeks,…a visit to see my family, which I have not seen most of them since September, will be divine! A break from everything will be nice. And have I told you yet?! My sister and two sister-in-laws are all PREGNANT! All due within a month of each other, mind you. December thru January. It’s going to be a BUSY holiday season! Can’t wait to see their belly’s!

Okay, I’m out for now…hoping to pop in again before the week is over.

I leave you with this cute pic of Ruby and J while up in Tahoe a couple of weeks ago.

How CUTE is she in that life preserver?!!?

Here Comes The Bridesmaid

August 21, 2010

Hope you enjoy reading Jen’s regular Friday post! Enjoy her beautiful wedding pictures too!

xo, Lydia

Canon in D starts playing. The bridesmaids proceed down the aisle. Next up is the matron of honor. But wait, where is she? Oh, there she is in the wheelchair. Nine months pregnant and unable to walk down the aisle at her own sister’s wedding. What a shame.

So this didn’t really happen. But my sister used to joke about how funny it would be if I was nine months pregnant and had to be pushed down the aisle in a wheelchair. She would crack herself up just picturing the scene. And years later, I will be 6 months pregnant at her wedding. Much better than 9 months, but still! I was on bed rest for quite a while with my son, so the whole wheelchair thing didn’t seem out of the range of possibilities. But so far, so good. I’m not in a wheelchair….yet!

My sister’s wedding is the first of three weddings that I’m going to be a bridesmaid in this fall. My brother and a good friend are also getting married. And despite the fact that I will have a rather large tummy in all the pictures, I am so excited about the weddings. I love going to weddings. I love seeing how people decorate, what the wedding party wears, what food they serve, what music they play, and that priceless look on the groom’s face when he gets a glimpse of his soon-to-be wife. Attending other weddings always makes me think back to my own wedding. I think about my favorite parts of the service, the vows my husband and I made to one another, and all the friends and families who came to celebrate with us.

So if you enjoy weddings as much as I do, I thought you might like looking at these pictures. These are just a few of my favorites. Now keep in mind that we will have been married 5 years this December, and I’m sure there is something that is already dated. Weddings are kind of like technology, you know!

Homemade Play Dough and the Solar System

August 19, 2010

Ruby and I made play dough last week. It was so very simple to mix up and such a fun activity to do at home!

She loved it. I gathered a few random kitchen gadgets for her to play with and she got to work!

Oh, how I adore those sweet little fingers!

The recipe is rather simple and easy ingredients that most have sitting in their cupboards.

Here’s what you need:

1 c. flour
1/2 c. salt
1 c. water
1 tbsp. oil
2 tsp. cream of tartar
Food coloring by drop

Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Transfer to a metal pot and stir all ingredients together while heating on low. Continue to stir until a ball forms. Transfer dough to counter (be careful, it’s warm!) and separate into 4 sections. Add a few dots of coloring to each section and knead each individual ball of dough (adding dots of color as you go!) until you reach the desired shade.

Store in an airtight container. I like to keep ours in the fridge, but you can also keep stored at room temperature!

I grew up on homemade play dough. I remember sitting at our family kitchen table and playing with it for hours and hours.

My greatest of memory of play dough was when I was in fifth grade. Our solar system model project was due in just a few days. All the cool kids were using perfectly round foam balls, purchased at our local craft store, of all different sizes and painting them the different planet colors, attaching pipe cleaners and glitter sparkles for extra flair, and orbiting their planets with wooden dowels (Sorry! I know that is a RIDICULOUS run-on sentence!). They all looked so cool.

But, my project was going to be nothing of that caliber,… completely different. There were 5 kids in my family after all and money wasn’t just floating around. Buying something like cylindrical foam balls was a luxury and not something we were able to splurge on. So I was forced to use what we had,… home made play dough dyed different colors to match the planets and thin sewing thread tied to a hanger to suspend my bulky and heavy play dough planets. On the day my project was due, I walked into class with my head hanging low, envious of my classmates pristine models and embarrassed of my homemade mess of play dough. The teacher had us showcase our models out in the hallway for a week. Everyday I walked by drooling over my classmates perfectly painted, round, and oh so very light and airy planets, while I meekly looked over at my heavy dry play dough planets barely hanging on by a thread (literally!). By the end of the week, a few of my planets had broken off, weighing down the thin sewing thread that they hung from. Oh, how pitiful.

I don’t even remember what I got on that project. I’m sure it was an “A” for effort or something of that sort, but what I do remember was the envy I had in the perfectly pristine solar models my classmates brought in. However, now when I look back on that experience, I am thankful for those heavy play dough planets. I think how thankful I am that I didn’t have the pristine solar system model. That I was forced to work with what I had at home. That I was forced to be creative, appreciate what I had, and be thankful when the time came to be given something out of the ordinary. My parents, in their efforts to raise five children, taught us to appreciate the things in life. To be thankful for all that we were given. Even though I couldn’t understand that when I stood in the elementary school hallway gazing at those foam planets, I am SO very thankful that I can look back on that now and laugh… and be thankful.

J and I are always talking of how we will raise our Ruby. I want her to grow up not thinking that she deserves all the perfect things in life. It’s not as tight for us as it was for my parents when they had all five of us kids. Who knows where we will be when Ruby enters the fifth grade (Gasp! Fifth grade?! She’s NEVER growing up!!), but I do hope no matter what our circumstances (whether foam planets or play dough planets!), I pray that we raise a child that is thankful for what she has been given. That she appreciates all that is given to her.

Sweet little Ruby, I am so very thankful for YOU! The gift from God you are to your dah-dah and mah-mah! You are our treasure…
