My little [big] brother

June 15, 2010

My little [BIG] brothers. *I laugh* When I was in my freshman year of college, my roommate used to *laugh* at me. You see, when I’d talk about my family, I’d talk about my “little” brothers. I have 2 younger brothers, an older brother, and an older sister. That equals five children in my family (counting me!). Yes, I know, HOW did my mother do it?!

When I spoke of my “little” brothers, my friend said she always envisioned these small boys. Little. Equaling: young, small, children, kids. Well yes, I guess you can say she was surprised and thought it was hilarious when she came to meet them and they were NOT little, but the exact opposite….taller, bigger than me! Young men.

Can you understand what I’m getting at?? Maybe not,… let me explain. They ARE my “little” brothers, they are younger than me. I’ve always been their older sister. But, to the rest of the world, especially after all those years (I’m no longer a freshman in college, that’s for sure!), they are MEN. They are strong. They have wives, their own family units now. My little brothers are no longer little. They have grown.

I love my family. I love my three brothers with all my heart. And I love my precious sister. And, now they are all grown and married with spouses of their own. I am SO  thankful for each of their spouses who love each of them so perfectly and fit them so well. I treasure their new wives and husband. I could write about all of them,…but today I have to address my youngest, littlest brother.

Meet my youngest brother,… littlest brother who joined the Army almost 2 years ago. Meet his wife. His adorable wife, who has stood by his side those 2 years and even before that….for many years. I could tell you of their  story, which is insanely romantic and makes you get butterflies in your stomach just hearing about it or I could tell you of the depth of who they are. The commitment they share, the love they have for eachother and the Lord, the strength and endurance they continue to hold onto each day…but I can’t begin to even get into all of that. You’ll have to talk to them.

For now, I will just tell you that my “little” brother has grown up. He is a man. He’s joined the Army, he’s married his sweetheart, he’s been deployed to Afghanistan.

And even though he’s a man, married, and grown,…I love him still. He’s my brother. He’s precious to me. And I’m thankful for him.

Ok, now that the tears have subsided (deep breath), I have to share this letter I wrote… a good old fashioned letter.

It felt good. Maybe, in a way, an outlet for me? A way to express myself, coming to terms with where he is,…

It was his birthday,….a birthday in Afghanistan. I wonder how it felt.

He’s going through so much that I will not even begin to understand or know. But, I do know this. He is brave and there are many many other men, who have family out there missing them also, that are sacrificing SO much for US. THAT, my friends, should be appreciated.

Even though you’ve grown, you are still my little brother. Thank you for all you’re doing. I love you, Sethie.

Nostalgia: Brandywine Summit

May 25, 2010

Oh man,… nostalgia just hit me BIG time.

This is Brandywine Summit: home to many of my childhood memories. Every summer growing up, we’d pack our family van full and drive the 45 minutes (which seemed SO incredibly far back then…hilarious, I know!) and head up to Brandywine Summit Camp Meeting Ground. Sometimes we’d stay for just a weekend, other times it’d be for a week at a time.

My immediate family of 7, YES 7!, came up here often to relax and get away from regular life.  My dad also grew up going to Brandywine Summit and stayed in this same cottage when he was a kid, along with his 2 older brothers. He used to tell stories of his great aunts, my great, GREAT aunts, who owned the place in the early 1900′s and lived here throughout the hot and humid east coast summer months.

When my dad and his brothers got older, they took over the cottage and brought along their children during the summers to hang out. It was a pretty cozy place.

Honestly, I’m sure you’re looking at these pictures and thinking, cozy?! What are you talking about?! More like creepy, you’re thinking! But, oh my,…it was cozy, so fun, we used to love it up there! See the HUGE tree trunk in the picture above? The cottage was built around that tree. Meaning: part of the wall INSIDE the cottage was home to the other side of that tree trunk! Crazy, huh?!

My sister, Ruby, and I drove up last summer to check it out while Ruby, J, and I were out for an East Coast trip. We walked through and relived the memories of our childhood tromps around Brandywine Summit. I admit it was ghostlike being up there,…not many people were around, but it brought back SO many fond, happy, and hilarious memories. Memories only my family could appreciate and understand.

I was flipping through my photo library earlier this evening and even though these pics are over a year old, I HAD to post them. I plan to make a couple of more posts in the next few days on sweet, old Brandywine Summit. I have to. For old times sake.

Snap, Crackle, and Pop!

July 16, 2008

Sometimes it’s nice to just get back down to the basics. I like to cook, but I’m not going to say I’m a food connoisseur. Nor, will I say I’m ashamed to make cereal box recipes. No, I am not.

So,… SNAP!, CRACKLE!, and POP!

Remember these?!

The other day, my younger brother who was visiting us, accompanied me to Costco. I believe he began to think I was just his sugar mama and J, his sugar papa, because his 20 year old self, just began throwing whatever he chose into our shopping cart. Not a big deal normally, but at Costco it is. J and I don’t really drink soda much, so when S decided he wanted 32 cans of Coke, I told him he’d have to drink all 32 cans in the next 5 days before he left to return to the East Coast. He promised he would. But, alas, he left last night and there are probably 20 cans left. Anyone want any Coke?

But, back to the snap, crackle, and pop!

When I returned from getting the 3 pack of Crest toothpaste in aisle 10, I found that little S has sneakily put a box of Rice Krispie Treats, the size of Antarctica (slight exaggeration), in our cart. I realized it had gone too far. Yes, S is the youngest in our family of 5, maybe he did miss out on some things being the youngest and getting forgotten, but I wasn’t about to let him have the 52 pack of Rice Krispie Treats. So, I kindly asked him to put them back and told him we’d go to Vons and get a box of cereal and marshmallows and I’d make him homemade ones.

So, that is what I did.

And you know what? They were delicious,…that butter, marshmallow, and rice krispie combination.

I truly felt like a kid again… in the 80′s. It was great.

Try out the recipe, if you like, it was simple and easy and takes you waaaaaay back!

The Joy of Having Many Siblings and Another Rehearsal Dinner Invitation!

July 7, 2008

It helps business when you have lots of siblings. Does that make sense? Maybe not… let me explain myself.

If you’re starting up an invitation business and need people/events to make invitations, by ways of experimenting with different invitation designs and advertising yourself,…well,…its super convenient when you have siblings between the ages of 20 and 30. They are immediately cornered and forced (it’s not like I had to get on my hands and knees and beg or anything,…) to allow me to make all invitations, for all celebratory events. Period.

It’s as plain and simple as that. Tell your parents to make lots of babies and then you have immediate, readily available customers.

Simple. HA!

So,… anyway! I have been behind on my posting and meant to post these photos of my other brothers rehearsal dinner invitations that took place a few weeks ago.

Behn and Megan’s colors for the wedding were green and the theme was very nature-y. Is nature-y a word? I think I just made it up!

Megan carried a bunch of wildflowers down the aisle. So pretty! And, the girls wore dresses that were white, with a green leaf pattern on them, so this hand drawn leafy pattern on the invitation seemed to match the wedding theme and color perfectly!

My mom also had me make bookmarks as favors.

This time, I sketched out my brother and Megan sitting on a pier, since the rehearsal dinner was at an Italian restaurant on the water, with a pier in the back.

I liked how they turned out and thought they were pretty cute…

Thanks siblings! I’m glad I have you!! Love you!

A busy weekend…

February 20, 2008

J and I had quite a busy weekend… and I feel like things haven’t slowed down since!!

We went up to visit his family and take part in our niece’s dedication this Sunday. It was so great to see family, especially since all the family from all parts of the country were able to travel into town to be together!! Lots of hanging out, laughter, and TONS of food.

Along with a ton of CUTE, Baby Gap clothes, I made a homemade card for our niece’s dedication with Numbers 6:24 written on the front.

I think this verse is so beautiful,…

And, I think this card is so cute!!

In the near future, I hope to add a section on my Pen and Paper site for stationary. But, for now,… I’m going to have to stick to finishing up my future sister-in-laws wedding invitations!! Note to self: Invitations must be sent out in the mail by Monday, February 25… must get working!!
